前回の続きとなります
どちらも「～かどうか」を表す if と whether ですが、前回までに whether に比べて if の方が「～かどうか」という意味で用いる際には制限が多い、としました
では他にはどのような時に制限があるのか、対照的な whether と比較しながら見ていきましょう
whether
whether で用いることができるのは次のような場合です
- ①動詞の目的語
- ②形式主語 it の文の真主語
- ③前置詞の目的語
- ④文頭にくる主語
- ⑤補語
- ⑥名詞の同格節
例
①I doubt whether or not he comes.「私は彼が来るのかどうか疑っている。」
②It doesn’t matter whether or not he comes.「彼が来るのかどうかは問題ではない。」
③I talked about whether or not he comes with them.「私は彼が来るのかどうかについて彼らと話をした。」
④Whether or not he comes is not clear.「彼が来るのか来ないのかははっきりしていない。」
⑤The important thing is whether he comes.「大切なことは彼が来るのかどうかということだ。」
⑥the question whether he comes「彼は来るのかどうかという問題」
if
上記の whether に対し、if で用いることができるのは次のような場合です
- ①動詞の目的語
- ②形式主語 it の文の真主語
の２つのみです
例
①I doubt if he comes or not.「私は彼が来るのかどうか疑っている。」
②It doesn’t matter if he comes or not.「彼が来るのかどうかは問題ではない。」
（✕）I talked about if he comes or not with them.
（✕）If he comes or not is not clear.
（✕）The important thing is if he comes.
（✕）the question if he comes

このように if は whether に比べて制限が多いことがわかります。もし話をしたり、文章を作成するとき「～かどうか」を用いる際には whether を使った方が無難です。ですが、このような違いがあるということは知っておいていただきたいと思います
